This international hand signal for ‘I need help, I am in danger’ was sent to us by the inki4help team from Germany. They taught us how it works, and Pramila is now teaching children, women and men so that they know who needs help, when and where. The information posters are displayed in schools so that the children never forget these hand signals and can show them to other children, women and men. This is particularly important in India, where violence and rape occur almost daily, especially in slums and villages. Many people there still live according to the old traditions of their ancestors, where a girl's life is worthless and she is forced into marriage before the age of 18. As a result, many have children at a young age whom they must care for, or both die during childbirth. To end this suffering of the girls, local staff talk to the villagers about how it is better to send children to school so that they have a better future and learn to defend themselves.
